It was developed by the US Military in the 1950's. They were trying to find better networks for communication. After the public was allowed access to the internet, heavy government restrictions remained until repealed in 1991. With the restrictions removed, the industry was able to grow making the technology more competitive. Commercial businesses were able to offer dial-up internet to more homes than they had before.
The first internet access was through telephone wires, called dial-up access. The method tied up the telephone and had to be disconnected so that members of the household could make calls. The only way to resolve the problem was to have a second line installed dedicated for internet use only.
In addition to the inconvenience of dial-up, it is also very slow. Technology solved that with DSL, Digital Subscriber Line. DSL still uses a dedicated telephone line but its faster speed allows for quick download of data, flash, music and streaming. People can watch video's or listen to music with DSL, whereas dial-up is to slow.
In rural area's DSL is often not available. The solution is to use satellites for internet access. The computer is connected to a modem that sends and receives data from a satellite. Satellite internet is often slower and cost more to have, but it is the only option some communities have.
Cell phones also have internet access through cellular broadband. Using the cell phone towers, cellular broadband is swiftly moving from third generation, or 3G, to fourth generation, 4G, speed. It is also simple to connect a computer to this signal. To do so would require the use of specialized phones as a modem. There is also the ability to use a USB cellular modem or a router for connection.
Most everyone is aware of Wi-Fi Hot-spots.
